Proper Techniques on How to Use a Snorkel

Snorkeling is becoming more and more of a popular recreational activity these days. For this reason, try to get your hands on a good quality snorkel and mask before they run out. Make sure you purchase on that fits your head well, too. Once you get that, get to the water as fast as you can and try the following techniques.

The first thing you must do before dipping in is to tighten the mask strap around your face. Make sure it is snug. As a test, place your face inside the water at a 45-degree angle and hold the snorkel in place practicing your breathing slowly and steadilywith your lipsfirmly wrapped around the mouthpiece. Once you’re comfortable, lace the mouthpiece through the mask to keep it in the perfect position for you. Now submerge your head along with the end of the snorkel allowing water to get inside. Surface your head without taking it out of the water and leave the end of the snorkel in the air. Blast a forceful exhale of air through the tube to get all of the water out and this will keep more water from getting in easily.

If you are using snorkel fins, make sure that your legs are at a downward angle so you don’t splash when you are kicking as this will scare away any surrounding fish and will annoy those around you. Make sure you take a part in choosing which type of snorkel you purchase as you can get the wet or dry version. The difference is that if you were to submerge the end of it, the wet version would allow water to stream in and block your breath while the dry version would just close off completely. Either way, you wouldn’t be able to breathe but at least you can choose whether you want water in your mouth. You should snorkel in calm, shallow water so you can become a part of the marine environment. To take a dive underwater, take a deep breath as you would without a snorkel and dive equalizing your ears by pinching your nose and trying to blow out through it. Once you get back up, blast that water out like you did before and keep kicking.

Follow these tips and you’ll be swimming with the fishes in no time. Just make sure to breathe and don’t splash too much when kicking. The most important thing is to have fun and try to get used to pushing the water out of your snorkel with a fast exhale. This may be common sense, but sometimes water might get in your snorkel when you have no air in your lungs. In that instance, just get to the surface and breathe around the snorkel. The worst things can get while snorkeling is either buying bad quality equipment or accidentally sucking in a little water. Need to see better?
